Norsk Spesialolje specializes in the treatment of contaminated water. Some of the treated water comes from waste oil collection, but there is also collected and treated a substantial amount from industry, ships and offshore activities. In respons to an increased demand  for treatment of contaminated water, Nosk Spesialolje decided to increase its capacity by building a new and modern process and distribution facility in Bamble. The new state of the art facility in Bambleis built to meet future requirements regarding both safety and the environment.

Processing the contaminated water starts with distillation, followed by a chemical/biological treatment. Norsk Spesialolje focuses on “complicated” water which requires treatment beyond standard chemical/biological treatment. Years of experience has proven distillation to be the best treatment method for complicated water. However, the distillation process requires a large amount of energy usage and can therefore be very expensive. The location in Grenland, however, provides Norsk Spesialolje with the ability to use excess heat from the next-door plant (Ineos) as a source of energy for the distillation process. In this way, the energy cost is significantly reduced compared to using electricity or steam from oil. Using this excess heat is also environmentally beneficial, which has resulted in Norsk Spesialolje receiving financial support from Enova (State funding agency) for the construction of the plant in Grenland.

 

NSO Bamble was finished in 2014 with a capacity of 16,500 m3. Increased demand and a need for larger capacity led to the expansion of 7 tanks in 2019. Now, the total capacity is 29,110 m3
